In the frames of ELTE GTK’s Business simulations and case studies course our students had the opportunity to take part in a Corporate Finance training at the Morgan Stanley Budapest office. The 25 participants were taught by the company’s own professionals—from analysts to department heads. Their ability to explain complex material in simple terms was widely appreciated by the students.
This two-day program offered a rigorous yet accessible introduction to financial markets and tools. As a student, Marcell Krasznai explained: "We tackled some tough subjects… yet the engaging style of the lecturers helped a lot." The curriculum typically included Corporate Finance (investment strategies, risk-return, NPV, CAPM, asset-liability management), Derivatives (options, futures, forwards, swaps, caps/floors, structured notes), Risk Management (Expected Shortfall, Basel III frameworks), Quantitative Models (arbitrage pricing theory, stochastic modeling) and Market Focus Areas (Equity, FX, credit, commodities). According to Cam Anh, one of the participants, it made the learning more relatable and inspiring as they could hear about every topic from industry experts. "The instructors did a great job breaking down complex concepts into bite-sized pieces." – added her colleague, Kareen Aziz.
Even challenging topics like securitization and exotic options were made approachable through case studies. The most common praise was how the course connected classroom theory to industry practice. "We didn’t just talk about theory—we heard about real-life examples that brought it to life." – summarized a student. Another participant, Viktoriia Kolesnikova added, that the sessions on hedging and credit derivatives helped her understand concepts she only knew on paper.
Hospitality was thoughtful: coffee, tea, and pizza were provided both days, helping foster an informal atmosphere. They noted that the course wasn't just about learning; it was also about connecting, i.e. meeting professionals from Morgan Stanley during and after sessions and conversations with upper-year students gave undergrads insights into career planning. Interactive elements like Q&A, scenario examples, and career anecdotes made the sessions engaging and personal.
Held at the Morgan Stanley Budapest office, the physical environment played a huge role in making students feel inspired. One person of the group described the venue as modern, comfortable, and conducive to learning. Someone else was astonished by the breathtaking view of the Danube River.
What students loved especially was the small group settings fostered openness and peer learning, the high-quality, well-paced content, the practical, real-world applications, the engaged and expert lecturers, the welcoming corporate environment hence the motivation for future career planning. Nonetheless some suggested that more frequent short breaks to maintain energy and pre-readings for students less familiar with financial modeling would have been welcomed.
All in all, these two days combined expert-led instruction, real-world insight, and invaluable networking into a professional experience. For those aspiring to work at a firm like Morgan Stanley, this course serves as both an educational milestone and a professional inspiration. As one student put it: "This course confirmed my interest in finance and gave me new motivation to develop my skills."
