History of Science

As a historian of science, I engage with non-traditional research topics the scientific legitimacy of which has been contested or outright rejected by various social groups throughout history (as either non-scientific, dangerous, or excessively technical) and, as a result, did not evidently warrant such scholarly treatment. I investigate the interplay of scientific, non-scientific, and pseudoscientific elements across different historical periods, aiming to uncover where the boundaries of accepted science lay in each era. Among other topics, they have examined the history of medieval astrology, fifteenth- and sixteenth-century learned magic, early modern artificial languages, modern "pseudohistory," and early modern cryptography. My most significant monograph, *Unlocked Books: Manuscripts of Learned Magic in the Medieval Libraries of Central Europe*, was published by Penn State University Press in 2008. I have authored several books in Hungarian, including *Mágia a középkorban* (Magic in the Middle Ages, 2007, Typotex), *A tudomány határai* (The Boundaries of Science, co-authors: Gábor Kutrovátz and Gábor Zemplén, 2008, Typotex), and *A rohonci kód* (The Rohonc Code, 2011, Jaffa), which have been well received by both readers and reviewers. Currently, I am they are conducting archival research on the use of cryptography in early modern Hungary.
